Medical & Financial Underwriting Guidelines
Medical Underwriting
Medical underwriting is the technical insurance term for the evaluation process the insurance companies use to determine whether and which exclusions or coverage limitations they might include in issuing any given policy. Sometimes the medical underwriting process can lead insurers to deny coverage completely or issue coverage with specific exclusions. For example, a person with a history of migraines might receive an exclusion for neurological conditions on a disability policy.
For residents and fellows at programs without a GSI available and for practicing physicians, the comprehensive evaluation includes the following:
- Rx check
- Medical record review
- Personal history interview
- Possible exam depending on age and amount applied for (contact us for specifics)
It is important to disclose your full and accurate medical history to your insurance agent so that we can properly advise you on your individual medical underwriting journey before applying and help match you with the best insurer and policy for your unique situation.
For residents and fellows at programs with a GSI available, the above requirements are waived.
Financial Underwriting
Financial underwriting is the review process the insurance company uses to determine how much monthly benefit to offer to you.
For practicing physicians, the evaluation includes the following. Please contact us about your specific situation.
- Pay statement review (for W2 employees)
- Tax return review (for higher benefit amounts for self-employed physicians)
- Details of employer provided coverage, if you have them
Within two years of completing their residency or fellowship, practicing physicians are offered monthly benefits that do not require financial underwriting. In this unique early career window, physicians may be able to establish a greater benefit than they might otherwise be eligible for based on their income and other coverage in force. For example, a resident or fellow in their last year of training can establish $8,000 in monthly income protection, which would normally require an income of $170,000.
