Resident & Fellow Physician Disability Insurance Guide
Our goal is to help you decide how to protect your medical career in the event of a disability.
This guide will educate you on everything you need to know about Disability Insurance (DI) for physicians.
Every physician should establish and maintain disability insurance protection throughout their career. Ideal timing to establish coverage is when you are young and healthy. As a physician, you have invested significant time, effort, and resources in your training. We strongly recommend protecting your most valuable asset, your ability to practice in your medical specialty.
Disability Insurance pays you a monthly benefit if you are unable to practice your specialty due to an illness or accident. Initial monthly benefit is established when a policy starts. For residents and fellows, most companies offer monthly benefit limits between $5,000 and $8,000, regardless of income. When you complete training and begin practice you can increase your monthly benefit based on your new income. Typically, monthly benefits are not taxable and are based on a percentage of your income.
