Cut through the insurance jargon—we break down what matters for our physician clients.
Who Needs Disability Insurance?
If you’re a physician, you need disability insurance. It’s that simple. You’ve invested years in your ability to practice medicine in your specialty. Securing coverage while you’re young, healthy, and qualify for the best rates is ideal. We recommend working with an experienced team with relationships with the major insurers who understand the unique financial realities physicians face.
How Do I Qualify For Disability Insurance?
Disability insurance is the hardest type of insurance to qualify for. One note in your medical record can result in exclusions or denial. Residents and fellows at our partner institutions bypass this entirely with pre-approved coverage and can avoid medical underwriting (evaluating your health history) and financial underwriting (verifying your income).
How Much Disability Insurance Can I Qualify For?
Residents and fellows can establish $5,000 – $8,000 monthly coverage regardless of current income. Practicing physicians can typically insure 60-70% of gross income. The amount you qualify for depends on income, specialty, and existing coverage. If you establish coverage with future increase options during training, you can add additional income protection in the future without medical underwriting.
